Gaia Wines Santorini ‘Wild Ferment’ Assyrtiko 2019

Fine Wine

Out of stock

The Gaia Estate was established in 1994 by Greek winemakers Leon Karatsalos and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos. They have two wineries, one on Santorini and the other in Nemea on the Peloponnese. Gaia’s main aim is to present the potential of the indigenous Greek grape varieties to the world. Gaia Wines Santorini have vineyards that have amazing historical roots, with some vineyards in this area date back 3000 years. The low yielding vines are self rooted and a poor in organic matter. The high sand content has ensured they have never been affected by phylloxera. The soils are volcanic with a high mineral content, which imparts a mineral quality to the resulting wine. For the fermentation 50% of the must went into stainless steel tanks, 35% in new oak (50/50 split between French and American) and 15% in acacia casks. After fermentation, each wine from the different container is tasted and the final wine is carefully selected and blended.

Tasting Note

Remarkable complex nose with elements of toast, smoke and mineral dusting. The palate is salty dry with a delightful intensity and a very funky wild ferment layering of complexity with oak sensitively woven into the mix. The finish is long with salty and tangy flavours. Superb
