The Imperial Gran Reserva is a true classic Rioja, with the first vintage bottled in the 1920s. The fruit for the wine come from their own 28 hectares of vineyards in Villalba (Rioja Alta), and selected vineyards in the nearby communes of Briones and Montalvo, where the vines average age is kept over 20 years to maintain quality. The wine spends 36 months in cask and 48 months in bottle before it is released to the market. The 2010 vintage was a particularly successful vintage in Rioja and this is a superb release.
The 2010 balances power, depth and concentrated fruit, all finely wrapped up with a sensational texture. On the nose is offers a smorgasbord of aromas with notes of forest fruits, allspice, and a sweet earthy character. The palate delivers a framework of refined oak with broad ripe tannins. A mouth filling richness of flavour combines on the mid-palate flavours of damson, crushed blackberries and balsamic intermingling, balanced by good acidity. Layered and complex, this has years ahead of it, especially in this format.
