Description
Chateau Haut-Brion was the first red Bordeaux to achieve name recognition outside France. Much admired in England in the 17th century, mentioned in Pepys’s diary in 1663 and in the cellar books of Charles II. At one point the owners opened a tavern in London called The Pontack’s Head. It remained open for over a century, selling Haut-Brion at a very high price.
One of Bordeaux’s first growth estates classified in 1855, Haut-Brion is well respected for its obsession with quality and impeccable winemaking. The vineyards are considerably elevated, at a height of 27m, thus there is plenty of deep gravel as well as parcels with a higher clay content.
Tasting Note
This vintage is a blend of 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc. Notes of dark cherries and blackcurrants intermingle with intriguing secondary notes. Medium-bodied with excellent purity of fruit.
