Description

Caparzo is one of Montalcino’s 30 historic wineries and was established in 1970. Purchased  by the current owner Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini in 1998 after a period of dilapidation, she was determined to grow, improve and develop this estate back to its former glory. Investment in the vineyards and modernisation of the winery have all helped insure winemaker Massimo Bracalente is enjoying a comeback as a top Brunello producer. The Estate covers 200 hectares, 90 of which are vineyards and 9 are designated for Brunello, throughout the different hillsides in the DOCG. Owning vineyards in Caparzo, La Casa, La Caduta, Il Cassero and San Piero Caselle, which constitute most of Montalcino’s best areas which is one of Caparzo’s strongpoints. This selection of the best vineyards allows them to draw the best fruit from every vintage.

Grapes for Rio Cassero are sourced from Caparzo’s 2 Brunello Estates, Carpazo and Il Cassero. Traditionally fermented followed by 3 years of ageing in large Slovanian oak and a further year in bottle before release. The wine has gorgeous red fruits such as cherry as well as dried herbs, spice and a touch of liquorice. Fresh and well balanced the red fruit carries through with a touch of garrigue and spice on the finish. The perfect match to rabbit ragu with parpadelle, roast meats, baked Portobello mushrooms or aged pecorino cheese.
