This mixed case contains some classic single variety wines along with some more esoteric blend of grapes. A good stepping off point to try something different this year.
Whites
Symington ‘Altano’ Branco, Douro 2018 12.5%
This delightful fresh vibrant Portugese white is sourced from high altitude vineyards in the Douro generally orientated to the North. Made from a blend of indigenous Portugese including Moscatel and Malvasia, it is aromatic and tropical with notes of nectarine and mandarin. Excellent value.
Biscardo Oropasso, Veneto IGT 2018 13%
This intriguing Italian white combines Garganega (key Italian white grape in Veneto) with Chardonnay. The wine is aged 5 months on its lees, which adds texture and interest. Combines notes of peach with delicate citrus notes.
Le Ballon Sauvignon Blanc, Pays D’Oc 2018 12.5%
A crisp light Sauvignon, from a cooperative working towards organic certification. This balances fresh acidity with fruit, making it a good Apertif or with lighter food.
Reds
Warwick ‘The First Lady’ Cabernet Sauvignon, Western Cape 2016 13.5%
Made from fruit from their younger vines, the wine spends 18 months in 2nd/3rd fill French oak barrels before release. A lovely full-bodied Cab’ with cherries, dark brooding chocolate, blackberries and licorice, all with a twist of leather right at the end.
Bodegas Olivares Finca Hoya de Santa Ana, Jumilla DOP 2017 14.3%
This gutsy red is made from a blend of Monastrell, Garnacha & Syrah from a high altitude vineyard with old ungrafted wines. Excellent with a hearty winter stew.
Le Ballon Syrah, Pays D’Oc 2018 13.5%
The silky smooth syrah has good dark fruit and warm spice. Medium-bodied, this works nicely on its own or with some red meat.
