New releases from Niepoort

Niepoort is a firm favourite at the Solent Cellar and this exclusive offer focuses on the newly released 2011 reds and 2012 whites.

2011 – Lived up to the high expectations created by this being a declared Port vintage. The wines combine elegance and freshness with concentration and focus.

2012 – A cooler vintage which bodes well for the whites which have precision and lightness of touch. The reds are also showing well, albeit it in a more restrained style than some of the blockbuster years.

The Whites…..

Niepoort Redoma Branco, 2012

Given that only a little over 2000 dozen of this wine is made, it seems to enjoy a broad and hardy band of followers. Grape varieties include Rabigato, Codega, Viosinho and Arinto amongst others. On first release it is often the most appealing of Niepoort’s premium white wines, with a little more openness. Quite citrus in character, and keeps the barrel notes comfortably in check. The main grape varieties are Rabigato and Codega.

Niepoort Redoma Reserva, 2012

Niepoort’s flagship white is made up of many grape varieties including Rabigato, Codega, Donzelinho, Viosinho and Arinto. The wine continues to impress, and stake its claim as the Duoro’s top white. It has an unparalleled elegance and complexity, with mineral overtones followed by hints of white and citrus fruit. The palate is complex and has depth, with fruit, mineral notes and a acidity that underpins the high concentration arising from the very old vines (80+ years). In short the wine is super-refined, pure and focused.

Niepoort Coche, 2012

Just the third vintage of this remarkable white wine. Starting in the vineyard the vines are more than 70 years old (Rabigato, Codega do Larinho amongst others) located on the right bank of the Douro river at 600m high. Fermentation is done in French oak barrels. Coche shows an intense and deep mineral character with perfectly integrated oak giving complexity. It shows dried fruit notes, stone fruit and a fine, delicate persistent finish.

The reds……

Niepoort Vertente, 2011

Perhaps the most overlooked wine in the range, Vertente sometimes deceives with its accessibility particularly in a vintage like 2011. The wine is a blend of Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca amongst others. There is a high proportion of Quinta de Napoles fruit, Vertente is the perfect calling card for Niepoort. The wine has black fruit aromas, spice and mineral notes.

Niepoort Batuta, 2011

This Douro Classic was aged 22 months in cask, of which 25% were new. The main fruit source remains the great Quinta do Carril vineyard, close to the winery at Napoles. Grape varieties include Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Rufete, Malvasia Preta amongst others. This is a full bodied wine with concentrated black fruits and fine delicate tannins.

Niepoort Charme 2011

70-100 year old vines, all fruit trodden in circular granite lagares with 100% stems. Grape varieties include Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca amongst others.  A fitting edition to this now famous name, 2011 seems to demonstrate more concentration than 2010, but remains super poised and super elegant. The nose is complex with fresh red fruit aromas, delicate notes of balsamic herbs and tea leaves give the wine aromatic complexity.
